Managing Food Storage Wisely: Guest Post
At the heart of emergencies lies the fact that no one ever knows when they are going to hit. A sudden storm could ravage through town, or a local attack could put the community into lock-down mode. Although some poke fun at those who stock up on bread, milk and eggs before a common snowstorm, the time to consider what you would eat in the event of an emergency is now.
Essentially, a food storage supply is a supply of food that you have in the event of an emergency. If you were trapped inside of your house, you would have enough food and water to last you. Determining how long you need the supplies to last is important. For people in rural areas, having enough food for months might be necessary. Those who live in urban or heavily populated suburban areas can generally aim for smaller amounts of time.
Space and Location
In order to store all of this food, you will need space. Intermingling these products with your regular food can just become confusing, especially if you are amassing the food over a lengthy period of time. Instead, assign a pantry, or an area in the basement, where you can store the food. However, remember, you must be able to get to the food in an emergency. If you live in an area that is prone to floods, the basement is probably the worst possible place that you could store all of your supplies.
Create a Food Storage Calendar
Going out to the store and purchasing everything that you need at once is unrealistic for most human beings. Instead, create a calendar for when you are going to buy certain products. Some people spread their purchases out over a 12-month period; however, you may want to shorten that so that you are prepared if a disaster strikes soon. For example, in March, you might stock up on canned soups, and in April, you would purchase evaporated milk. In May, then, you could purchase canned vegetables. Each month, or week, you can add new items to the supply closet.
Keep a List
Do not just create a calendar in your mind or randomly decide what you are going to purchase when you are at the grocery store. Make a chart at home as to what you are going to purchase each time you go out on one of these shopping ventures. Then, once you have purchased the items, check them off. Also, you should write down where the items are stored. You should keep this list in a handy place. In the event that you need the items, you can simply look at the list and know where the food is.
Be Reasonable with Your Purchases
You do have to determine a budget for this project although spending only a few dollars a week is quite simple if you are going to build the supply up over a long period of time. Furthermore, you have to determine how much food your family reasonably needs to survive. Consider what you would need for one person and then multiply that by the number of people in your family. Also, you should purchase only those goods that you are going to eat. Having a large tub of goods does not help if no one eats the items.
Rotate the Supplies into Your Everyday Cooking
Let’s say that one night you want to make rice and beans for dinner, and you have many cans of beans in the food supply storage area. Take one of those cans of beans out to use. Then, the next time you go to the store, replace that can of beans. That way, you are keeping the products in the storage unit as fresh as possible. However, since you would have purchased additional beans anyway to make the meal, it is not as though you are spending more money.
Whether a dangerous weather situation blows through town, or another dire set of circumstances comes into fruition, you want to be prepared. Having enough food for you and your family can be the reason why you are able to both survive and thrive through the situation.
