The Best of Survival Video Games
Though this may not be a conventional post about prepping or survival I think entertainment is good to have. I like to play video games and it is nice to find some survival based games even though there aren’t that many. I have listed a few of the games that I feel are great survival games. Even if you don’t learn a ton about how to survive from them they are still quite enjoyable.
State of Decay
I just recently bought a game called State of Decay. I will have to say this is the best survival type game I have ever played. The game is set in a town where there has been a zombie apocalypse. The great thing about this game is there is so much you can do in this very big realistic world. There is also a distinct focus on building up your base with better fortification, medical tents and even a workshop. You also must find resources, by scavenging, to make sure your base and the survivors in it can keep surviving. One of the coolest things about this game and very uncommon is that when your character dies they are gone from the game and you then become one of the other survivors in your base. So your life count is based on the amount of survivors you find and bring into your small community. It is only on the Xbox arcade, but the best thing is the price. In a world with $60 and $70 games the $20 (1600 microsoft points) is a steal for a full game.
Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas
Fallout takes place in a post apocalyptic world. The combat is quite unique, but very fun. Almost everything in the game can be engaged from tools to medical kits. This game will give you many hours of enjoyment while leveling up your skills. This game also has a great bartering system which will be a skill that you would need to master during a real TEOTWAWKI situation.
The Walking Dead: A Telltale Games Series
Although this is based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book series – There is more to the story of the famous Walking Dead comics. With a mixture of true horror and survival – The scene is set! A gamer experiences the impact of being a survivor of the undead apocalypse causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. Rick Grimes is one of the few survivors in the society with no government – The undead are all over the place and if they don’t take your life, starvation and betrayal will challenge you as you attempt to survive.
I Am Alive
This is definitely a real gem that is very overlooked. To bring you up to speed, ‘’I am alive’’ is the brainchild of Ubisoft Shanghai and distributed by Ubisoft, the same partnership that brought you Beowulf: The Game. I Am Alive is a tale of a young man’s quest looking for his wife and daughter. Before this journey, we are presented by the “Event’’ that created an apocalyptic world. A year later, the young man finds Haventon, his hometown in muddles, buildings are destroyed and the society has been ragged causing residents to take all necessary actions to survive. If you are a survival enthusiast, you will enjoy this game without a doubt.
Left 4 Dead I & II
Warning -! If you’re not of a young age, I would not advise you to go anywhere near this game – Because this kind of adrenaline rush might get you a pacemaker if your heart is not of a young age. In the apocalyptic world, the rabies virus has spread through the human population. It’s fight together or die alone. The contagion’s victims have become disfigured, psychopaths and are attacking the remaining unaffected. It’s a game of will and grit where the sole survivors fight for safety.
With all the popularity of survivalism and prepping throughout the past few years, it isn’t a surprise that game makers have started to get into the genre. For me these are some of my favorite games and most of them are really intense on decision making which is one of the great things. They combine skill and brain power with fun.
